Society for Equality, Respect And Trust for All (SERATA) is a nonprofit organization based in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah that promotes gender equality by engaging men and boys in partnership with women and girls. We believe that achieving true gender equality involves the effort of both genders, transcending beyond women empowerment. Our focus is on changing harmful gender norms and unequal power dynamics by addressing the root problem, that begins from birth.
Our programs and advocacy efforts show that promoting skills for healthier relationships through better communication in couples & families, as well as advocating for healthy, respectful masculinity leads to improvements in the lives of women and girls, as well as in men’s.
We are a registered organization under the Registrar of Societies Malaysia since 14 December 2018.
Work to dismantle long-held socially constructed gender roles and promote gender equality by engaging men and boys in partnership with women and girls.
To achieve equal representation and fair division of tasks of both genders at work and in the home to reflect true partnership and respect
SERATA is based on a Malay word “serata” which can mean “everywhere” or “throughout” or “evenly”. It can also mean “universal” in some contexts. We chose the name because human rights are universal and inalienable – everyone deserves the same rights regardless of gender, race, religion or citizenship status, or even wherever they are in the world.
