About the Project

Stories of life at home is a project by the Society for Equality, Respect and Trust for All Sabah (SERATA) that is supported by the British Council through the Connections Through Culture Grant.

In 2010, director Ridley Scott produced ‘Life in a Day’, a crowdsourced film that allowed anyone to tell their story to be presented in a montage of life in a day, proving that everyone with a camera in their hands was capable of producing a story that was engaging, without the necessarily endless knowledge required for production. So, we thought, what would a crowdsourced film for community filmmakers look like?

Today, more than ever, telling our stories has become more accessible to everyone: Through the internet, a gateway has been opened for anyone around the world to tell their story in any format to a worldwide audience; Through technology, everyone has access to a video camera in their phones.

To that end, SERATA has partnered with Junction 15 productions, in creating a program that is designed to give anyone with a story, a chance to have that story told in the most effective medium : video. This pilot program saw 8 potential community storytellers through an intensive 3 day filmmaking workshop, that delivered all the essential tools required to understand basic filmmaking coupled with as much on-the-ground experience to put that knowledge to use immediately. This workshop resulted in the selection of 4 community storytellers whose stories will be presented on this website.

This project provides a template that bridges the technicality that comes with the production of film with the storytellers that have fewer opportunities to have their stories told to a mass audience. We believe that this template can be used as a way to empower as many communities, to create stories that are told and produced to a higher standard that makes it engaging to a larger audience.
